[Review of] David Paterson, Fair Seed-Time: Robert Evans, Francis Newdigate and the making of George Eliot

Title

[Review of] David Paterson, Fair Seed-Time: Robert Evans, Francis Newdigate and the making of George Eliot

Description

This is a scholarly investigation into the life of Robert Evans (1773–1849), his relationship, both professional and personal, with Francis (known as Colonel) Newdigate (1774–1862), and the influence of both on Robert’s daughter, Mary Ann Evans, with particular regard to her subsequent career as the novelist George Eliot. Paterson acknowledges at the outset the limitations imposed upon him by his being denied access to Robert Evans’ diaries for 1823, 1826, 1835–37 and 1839–42 since these are not in the public domain (xii).
